Who can apply?
Grants are designated to support academic research for Finnish medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and natural sciences related to those, such as chemistry and physics according Orion Research Foundation’s rules
- for researchers with a doctorate (completed in five years*), for continuation of research (EUR 30,000-50,000) and
- for young scientists without a doctorate, for scientific research (maximum
EUR 6,000).
The Foundation does not award travel grants, for example, for travel to congresses.
An applicant may receive maximum EUR 50,000 grant once and maximum 6,000 grant no more than twice.
The greater grant can be applied by researcher with a doctorate completed in five years – or with an exception *) in seven years. The exact day is considered from the application deadline.
*) By completing the degree of specialist, specialized dentist or specialized veterinarian or for other special reasons (such as maternity, paternity, parental or nursing leave, conscript or non-military service or long-term sickness) applicant may extend the period of five years to maximum seven years. Applicant shall give clarification for surpassing the deadline of five years in CV.
Orion Research Foundation grants
The greater grants (maximum EUR 50,000) are awarded for researchers with a doctorate, for continuation of research. Research abroad with the greater grant is appreciated including postdoc period abroad and extending or returning from postdoc period abroad. In this case, applicant shall attach the commitment from the university or institute abroad.
The smaller grants (maximum EUR 6,000) can also be personal or for expenditure.
Instructions for grant application
You can apply by filling out an electronic application form which is published in August. The application form can be filled in Finnish, Swedish or English. The Foundation does not take additional attachments or recommendation letters into account. Please, add an email address which is valid until the end of the year because the decisions are sent by email.
The application period ends in early September. It is not possible to make changes to applications after they have been submitted. The decisions on grants will be published around the end of year on the Research Foundation’s website. Emails about the decisions are sent to the grant applicants and recipients in November and the grants will be paid in January.

Evaluation of applications and decisions
The applications will be evaluated by the Foundation's board. The grant recipients will be decided in November. The decisions on grants will be published towards the end of November.
